  • About Us

It all started with an idea of the founder of the company, Bert Morsbach, and his vision to produce a Western-style wine for the first time in Myanmar.

It came to fruition in 1999 when he and friends, who shared their common love for the country and for winemaking, established today’s winery near Taunggyi in the southern Shan State.

From the outset the company focused its pioneering development work to produce premium wines with the whole country as its market. The slogan was and still is: “A better wine every year”. The chances were excellent: 150 days of sunshine, a warm climate and ideal soil conditions.

    Our Story

GREAT WINE START IN THE VINEYARD

In 1998 the first 3,000 vines were imported from Europe and were planted in Loikaw, the capital of the Kayah State.

    In June 1999,

The Loikaw Vineyard was relocated to MAS’ Htone Bo Farm, near Taunggyi in the Southern Shan State.  The wine-makers-to-be thus became tenants of the Ministry of Agriculture which marked the beginning of an excellent cooperation ever since.  Some 15,000 additional vines were imported and the research & trial period could start.  At that time the pioneers did not know that they were changing the wine map of the world.  To make Myanmar a country which was to produce excellent wines for outstanding Myanmar food and other special occasions.

    In December 2004

Finally, in December 2004 Aythaya wine was first presented to the public at the Charity Bazaar of the British Embassy, followed by a Grand Dinner at the STRAND and at the LE PLANTEUR restaurant in early 2005.  It was the advent of a new Asian Wine:  the AYTHAYA wine from Myanmar.

    in early 2015

Today, in early 2015, the founders can claim that Myanmar by now has definitely become a proud member of the family of wine-producing countries of the world, with the best wines yet to come. That applies especially to AYTHAYA’s white wines.  In hindsight, it was a hugely challenging times which span from the first viticulture research in 1997, followed by bottling the first wines in 2004and its first exports in 2009.
